An expert believes that a nuclear explosion might have occurred at the epicenter of the Sichuan earthquake. Suspicions have been growing that China's testing of a nuclear weapon resulted in the catastrophe.
According to a China News Services (CNS) report on May 31, 2008, paramedics from the People's Liberation Army hospitals and psychologists from Beijing found the bottom of a valley near the epicenter covered with concrete debris on May 23. The valley was about 0.6 miles wide and the concrete debris was approximately 10 to 20 inches thick, covering the bottom of the valley for almost 1.5 miles.
There wasn't any major construction nearby. Mr. He, an elderly local resident, saw what happened. When the earthquake occurred on May 12, people saw something erupt from the top of a mountain next to the valley, "It looked like toothpaste being squeezed out… No, it wasn't [magma]. It was these concrete pieces. The eruption lasted about three minutes," said He.
Confirmed Nuclear Explosion Near Epicenter
The overseas Chinese website Boxun News, quoted an unnamed expert confirming there was a nuclear explosion near the epicenter. The thickness of the concrete pieces matched that used in China's underground military bases. The expert explained that there are documented cases that earthquakes cause volcanic eruptions, but no eruptions have ejected concrete.
Based on the CNS report and the timing of the eruption at the scene, there wasn't any sign of natural volcanic activity. The expert was certain a nuclear weapon explosion shattered the underground concrete structures and the debris was hurled into the air.
The expert believes the nuclear explosion was not confined to the underground test area and had caused radiation contamination. The expert also called Beijing to recommend that they accept help from other countries, seal up the area, find and provide help to those who had been exposed to contamination during the rescue work, and take emergency measures to prevent water contamination in the area.
Beijing's Unreasonable Response After the Earthquake
At least one of Beijing's nuclear military bases is located in Mianyang City, Sichuan, near the epicenter. There were predictions of the earthquake before it took place. However, the local government in Aba District openly announced the predictions were 'rumors.' After the Sichuan earthquake took place, Beijing did not allow any international relief groups to begin rescue efforts until 72 hours later, missing the most crucial window for saving lives.
Chinese Internet surfers also disclosed that witnesses from the area of the epicenter said that right after the quake, military Special Forces blocked traffic toward the epicenter on the mountain and people had spotted men in white chemical protective clothing in military vehicles driving toward the mountain. Rescue personnel near the epicenter were all military.
Speculation has also been circulating that the Sichuan earthquake could have been triggered by an accidental nuclear explosion in an underground military facility that destabilized the surrounding strata.
