This thread is designed for discussion on Arms Control and Disarmament Affairs/Agreements regarding conventional or rather "certain conventional" weapons. It is preferred that all discussion that fall under this category be discussed here rather then opening up new threads.

* Convention on Cluster Munitions (CCM):

Countries that ratify the convention oblige never under any circumstances to:

i. Use cluster munitions

ii. Develop, produce, otherwise acquire, stockpile, retain or transfer to anyone, directly or indirectly, cluster munitions.

iii. Assist, encourage or induce anyone to engage in any activity prohibited to a State Party under this Convention.

Adoption Date: 30 May 2008
Place: Dublin (Ireland)
Opened for signature: 3 December 2008
Entry into force (EIF): after it has been ratified by 30 states

As for January 2009 only 4 states have ratified it, 91 other have signed it but not ratified.

• CONVENTION ON CERTAIN CONVENTIONAL WEAPONS (CCW)

Opened for signature (with protocol I, II & III): 10th April 1981
EIF: 2nd December 1983
Depository: UN Secretary General

-states must ratify minimum of 2 protocols to become a member

ØProtocol I: Prohibits the use of weapons intended to injure by fragments which are not detectable in the human body by X-rays.

ØProtocol II: Prohibits or restricts the use of mines, booby-traps & other devices.

ØProtocol III: Restricts use of incendiary weapons

ØProtocol IV: Prohibits employment of laser weapons specifically designed to cause permanent blindness to un-enhanced vision.
ØProtocol V: Recognizes the need for measures of a generic nature to minimize the risks & effects of explosive remnants of war.

• ANTI PERSONNEL MINES (APM) TREATY:

Opened for signature: 3rd-4th December 1997 at Ottawa, 5th December at NY
EIF: 1st March 1999
Dep: UNSG

ØProhibits anti-personnel mines, which are defined as mines designed to be exploded by the presence, proximity or contact of a person & which will incapacitate, injure or kill one or more persons.

ØEach party undertakes to destroy all its stockpiled anti personnel mines ASAP but no later than 4 years after the EIF of the convention for that state party.

ØEach party also undertakes to destroy all anti-personnel mines in mined areas under its jurisdiction or control not later than 10 years after the EIF for conventions for that party.

The CWC has been credited with the significant reduction of existing US and Russian chemical weapons stock-pile over the years. It has also put some restrains on other countries that may have tried to develop chemical weapons.

There is also the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC):

While the BWC bans biological weapons, it does not ban research and biodefense programs. However, to carry out biodefense programs, biological toxins/agents are required, just not in the quantities needed for war. Nonetheless, this means that the capability to produce the biological toxins/agents are available in some countries that are party to BWC.
