Israel, Iran liable to clash in 2009 over nukes, says U.S. intel chief

Israel and Iran are liable to enter into a confrontation or a crisis sometime this year due to Tehran's progress in its nuclear weapons program and Jerusalem's determination to thwart it, the head of U.S. intelligence told lawmakers on Thursday.

In a report to the Senate Intelligence Committee on the potential threats as foreseen by the 16 intelligence arms of the United States, Dennis Blair said that Hezbollah, the Lebanese-based Shi'ite group which is backed by Iran, has beefed up its weapons arsenal in preparation for another round of fighting with Israel.

I think of this as more Western scare tactics to hinder nuclear program progress. Plus, US intelligence failed and permitted 9/11 to occur.

Now its too late for Israel to target Iran nuke facilities already faced defeat from hizbullah and unable to wipe out hamas,also iran has now long range missiles only need magnetic rings to develop required quantity of uranium for A bombs.

In this senario Israel will not take risk neither US.

It's a studied conclusion in that it's obvious that the Israelis are worried about it and they would like to destroy Iran's nuclear capability but it is not going to happen. Iran has learnt the lesson of Osirak in that you don't have one big nuclear facility but spread them out across the country. Even the U.S. seems skeptical that all the sites could be destroyed. In addition, with Obama making overtures to Iran there won't be any American support for an Israeli strike.

If Israel strikes, you can be sure Iran will rain down on Israel with their missiles. hitting both civilian and military targets, but most likely random civilian targets imo. What happens next, I'm not so sure. Israel may continue to bomb Iran conventionally, hoping to take out Iran's missile capability or if it gets too bad... end their nuclear ambiguity.
