You can clearly see the white spots on the tail and rear fuselage where PAF's signs will later be painted. I believe these pictures are from final flight testing in Ukraine. Anyways, enjoy!!:dance:dance

Holiday Italy - 2009

Hi all,

In September 2009 in went to Italy with my girlfriend and son for our family holiday.
I just sorted out hunderds of holiday photo's. Among them also some aviation shots.

WW II nazi photos

Hello to all, first if you are reading this and are miltary, thank you for your sacrifices to defend our still great nation.

My father was in WW II in artillery in the 42nd Rainbow Infantry. During the war his company came to occupy an air base in Firth, Germany. Upon searching the premises he found some slides that we believe to be war propaganda materials. The slogan on all the slides says in German "For Germany's freedom!". Several of the slides are excellent shots. There are twenty slides all together. Are these of any special significance? Thanks to all!!

Flight Test Nation 2009 Review & Gallery Open

Following an extended hiatus after the October 2006 show, Edwards AFB hosted Flight Test Nation 2009 Air Show and Open House this weekend. The show was put together on short notice, only having been announced in May after funding was finalized. Regardless, the staff put together an excellent program - it was a great show.

In keeping with Edwards' rich history of aviation testing and record setting flights, legendary test pilots Chuck Yeager & Joe Engle opened the show from the back seats of a pair of F-16 Vipers breaking the sound barrier at an altitude around 35,000 feet. On the ground, the double sonic boom resonated like ordnance explosions but didn't break any glass.

Edwards unique situation as test facility for the US military, NASA, and several military contractors lead to a wealth of static displays including the first air show appearance of a flight worthy F-35A Joint Strike fighter. A mock-up that has been trucked to numerous shows is very realistic and the test aircraft are on display at the Naval Air Museum & Smithsonian/Udvar Hazy Museum, but barring severe mishap, this aircraft will be put into service.

USAF F-35 Model AA1 was showcased in a hangar along with the US Navy X-47B Unmanned Combat Air System and several other aircraft including the Boeing Phantom Works X-48B. The latter was something of a surprise to me as in my limited reading it hadn't registered me that it was the size of a large RC aircraft. When the photos are posted, note the cones to gain perspective.

Other static aircraft included a SR-71, NF-15B with canards, NF-16 laminar flow testbed, NF-18, White Knight and a host of others. Current aircraft in flight included B-1, B-2, B-52, F-22, F-16, A-10, T-38, C-17, C-130 and White Knight II. Warbirds in flight included B-17, B-25, P-38, P-51, SNJ and Tora, Tora Tora. Golden Knights parachute team also performed. Unfortunately, the Global Hawk flight was scrubbed, but that was only a minor detraction from an excellent show.

I was fortunate enough to get to take some photos from the catwalk on the tower Saturday afternoon. Lots of photos to sort through, crop, resize & post. Only 8 photos posted as of this writing, but expect a lot more to be added in coming weeks. Link for gallery is:

ASEAN Armies Rifle Meet

ASEAN Armies Rifle Meet (AARM) was first established in 1991 under the recommendation of the Malaysian Chief of Army at that time. In 2000, it was decided that since all the ASEAN Armies Chiefs are together for the AARM closing ceremony, all the ASEAN Chiefs of Armies will be invited to participate in a multilateral meeting to discuss regional military and security issues. It is the first forum of its kind and it is known as the ASEAN Chiefs of Armies Multilateral Meeting or ACAMM.

For more details see the AARRM website and a message from each and every Chief of Army in ASEAN. The 19th AARM officially commenced with a flag raising ceremony on 6 Oct 2009 and the closing ceremony will be held on 20 OCT 2009. Therefore the event is still ongoing and more pixs from the AARRM are to follow below.

The quality of pictures released is poor but the idea of the ASEAN region working to build trust, through confidence building measures (CBMs) is good. Considering that we used to be in armed conflict with each other and that there are some border skirmishes, these CBMs are highly necessary.

Note: For goodness sake, they should at least work on the colour balance and make sure that the pix posted are not washed out. There is no pride in the work product. Singapore's MINDEF and the organising committee can do a much better job at putting up a 'good product' on the web, since we are hosting the AARM.

Al Jazeera on I'sian Quake - 1 Oct 09

The 2009 Sumatra earthquakes occurred just off the southern coast of Sumatra, Indonesia. The major shock hit at 17:16:10 local time on September 30, 2009 (10:16:10 UTC) and had a moment magnitude of 7.9. The epicenter was 45 kilometres (28 mi) west-northwest of Padang, Sumatra, and 220 kilometres (140 mi) southwest of Pekanbaru, Sumatra. Death-toll estimates range from a few hundred to over 1300, with thousands more trapped in collapsed buildings and under landslides.

SAF Medical Team Dispatched

A 54-strong medical team from the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) and 42 members of the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) were dispatched on 3 Oct 2009 in 4 Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) C-130 aircraft to Indonesia. According to CJ, pilots and aircrew from 122 Squadron evidently had a busy spell on Friday evening (2 Oct 2009) and Saturday afternoon (3 Oct 2009).

"In supplementing what they have at the hospital, we have doubled the capacity of their existing A & E department, not just in space, or the number of casualties they can handle, but in terms of overall capability," said LTC (Dr) Teo. The medical team featured in the above video comprise of two general surgeons, two orthopaedic surgeons, two anaesthetists, an A & E doctor, three general practitioners, SAF medics and seven medical volunteers from Tan Tock Seng Hospital.

2009 OCT USAF Thunderbirds, RMAF Subang, Malaysia

Many thanks to One Malaysia, the US Embassy Malaysia and the Royal Malaysia Airforce(RMAF) for hosting the USAF Thunderbirds at the RMAF Subang airbase.

Unfortunately, it was a no go for a world class performance by the USAF Thunderbirds here in Singapore.

An estimated 100 000 people came down to RMAF Subang airbase for the airshow show.

MCAS Miramar Air Show Review & Gallery Open

Attended Friday & Saturday shows & took over 4,000 photos. Reject rate looks like about 2-3%, but lots of duplication & it's going take some time to sort, select, resize & post. It took over 2 hours to upload all the photos from CF cards to computer. Edwards AFB Open House & Air Show in 2 weeks and Aviation Nation is in 6 weeks, so not much spare time available.

As always, this is/was a premier west coast air show. The Miramar Marines do a superb job. Blue Angels, Snowbirds, Viper West, Harrier, MAGTF & Golden Knights demos plus Warbirds, Patriots & other civillian demos. Extensive & excellent assortment of static displays, including an M142 HIMARS. Not a single Osprey in sight, so those squadrons must be deployed. I finally took the opportunity to climb up to the flight deck of a C-5. Never gave it any thought, so crew quarters came as something of a surprise.

My first time seeing the Snowbirds/Moose Jaw 9 (asked #7 Pilot & he didn't find that description offensive - my intent is to be witty or glib, not offensive). I was impressed with their formation flying, but not so much with the soloists. That may be a reflection on the Tutor not being a very high powered aircraft. The Snowbirds Team Announcer said that all 11 (includes 2 spares) aircraft combined, produce less thrust that an F-18 (and no, I didn't fact check him). The #1 plane had a bird strike on Saturday. Not an engine hit, but he landed & switched planes. That delayed their show and they weren't able to do their entire routine. Nobody hurt & they didn't make an announcement, so not sure if there was any damage to the aircraft.

The twilight show also featured one of the final Fat Albert JATO take-offs. We were told the Blue Angels would be using the last bottles at their homecoming and final shows of the season at Pensacola. I took video of it, so that will take more time to review & isolate some frames

The thumbnail doesn't do it justice - so hope you'll check it out. The solo pilot jets down the runway a few feet off the ground building speed and then yanks the throttle back, kicking up a cloud of dust & even pulling some vapor.
