Basically, I'm wondering whether it's possible to shoot down a SAM that's been launched in the air. For example, in order to cover ground troops, air support is a necessity. But when the enemy outlines the areas where your fighters are operating with SAM batteries then your fighters are in a state of danger. However, air support is still a necessity so therefore covering your fighters is a necessity. However, how can you do this in the first place? I've heard others speak of shooting them down with interceptors from a distance, but I'm not sure if that is an actual possibility. Any answer anyone can offer would be great.

DF-21 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia background information source:
Anti-ship ballistic missile

The US Department of Defense has stated that China is developing a high hypersonic[1] land-based anti-ship ballistic missile based on the DF-21, with a range of up to 3,000 kilometres (1,900 mi).[4][5] These would combine manoeuvrable reentry vehicles (MaRVs) with some kind of terminal guidance system. Such a missile may have been tested in 2005-6, and the launch of the Jianbing-5/YaoGan-1 and Jianbing-6/YaoGan-2 satellites would give the Chinese targeting information from SAR and visual imaging respectively. The upgrades would allow China to employ the missile to destroy US Navy aircraft carriers.[6]

The 10-1-09 parade, which marked the 60th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China, featured more than 8,000 servicemen and women, nearly 500 tanks, missiles and other military vehicles and a flyover by Chinese warplanes.
Lieutenant General Fang Fenghui, general director of the parade, told Xinhua the parade was supposed to showcase the transformation of the PLA from a low-tech, manpower-intensive force to a high-tech, 21st-century one.

Looking to the more experienced people here, perhaps this has already been asked but I was reading good ol Wikipedia, and came across this picture as the reference to the last years 2008 South Ossetian / Georgia / Russian conflict.

here is the link to the picture

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...-0629H-021.jpg

it is described as a booster stage of a russian rocket, on wikipedia, to meet it looks about the size of the terminal part of a Tochka or even Iskander unit, if not the terminal than perhaps the top 20 percent, based on the diameter etc. Color looks like a Surface to Surface type missle along with the thickness of it, the two stabilizers look familiar too, but perhaps its a surface to air missle?

Any thoughts or story on this picture?
Cheers!
