One of Britain’s new £2bn aircraft carriers could be sold off under cost-cutting plans being considered by the Ministry of Defence. India has lodged a firm expression of interest, the Observer has learned.
The sale of one of the two 65,000-tonne vessels would leave the Royal Navy with a single carrier and could force Britain to borrow from the French fleet, which itself has only one carrier and is reluctant to build more. Last summer the French president, Nicolas Sarkozy, proposed to Gordon Brown that the two navies co-ordinate maintenance and refitting so that one was at sea at all times.
According to senior defence sources, Whitehall officials are examining the feasibility of a sale as part of the strategic defence review that will start early next year and is expected to result in savage cuts.
The carrier programme has already been delayed by two years to push back spending commitments, which itself will end up costing the taxpayer more in the long run. BAE Systems began work in July on HMS Queen Elizabeth, which is due to come into service in 2016. Preparatory work on the Prince of Wales, due for launch in 2018, has also started. The two carriers will replace the ageing Invincible class and are three times the size.
There were fears that the government could scrap one altogether. But it is understood that the financial penalties would be prohibitive. About 10,000 jobs in Portsmouth, Barrow-in-Furness, Fife and Glasgow depend on the orders.

MoD may sell aircraft carrier to India to limit cuts IDRW.ORG

Guys how bad is it in Britain now that they might want to sell one of their new carriers...first the nuke sub and now this!!#@
Anyways i dont think the government would buy it though it might just be a fluke show.....they shouldnt but it its too costly(considering how much they have already shelled out on the goshkov

A couple of questions on the Turkish Navy

I seem to remember that the Turkish Navy awarded a contract to Aselsan about 4 years ago to upgrade the ESM on the Dogan Class - I have been looking around but can't find any info on how the programme is going and if the new systems have been installed - any clues anyone?

Has there been any indication as to the prefered ESM for the new MILGEM Corvettes - again I have had a look around but can't find any details.

Any help greatly appreciated

In pure mass it should be the russian Oscar II SSGN class but then its shorter then all the russian and most of western SSBNs. The new russian Borei class has a lengh of 170m but so does the U.S Ohio class. Ohio has more displacement when surfaced (16.000 tons) in comparement with the borei (14.000 tons). The Borei has more when its submerged (24.000 tons), Ohio (18.700 tons).

Its a very close match.

MOBILE, Ala. — The second of the Navy's new generation of speedy warships designed to operate close to shore topped 50 mph in builder trials completed this month.

Officials say the Independence, a 418-foot ship built in Alabama, traveled in excess of 45 knots, which equates to nearly 52 mph, and sustained 44 knots during a four-hour, full-speed sprint.

The so-called littoral combat ship is the second of two competing designs. The one built by Austal in Mobile, Ala., features a tri-hull design. The lead contractor is Maine's Bath Iron Works, a General Dynamics subsidiary.

The competing ship, Freedom, features a more traditional hull and was built by a team led by Lockheed Martin. It will go into service next year. Eventually, the Navy wants to build up to 55 of the ships.

Well, I was thinking about the Future SSBN Fleet and how the UK could pay for? Really, SSBN's in general are mainly used as deterents. Personally, I've always wondered if even 12 SLBM's was kind of overkill. Especially, consider the UK currently only carrier 4-6 MIRV's per D-5 SLBM. For comparison the US carries 8 on the missle and both could carry as many as "12". (Note: The UK warheads are much smaller than the US ones? 100 kT vs 475 kT)

So, why not drastically cut back the number of missiles carried and just mount more warheads?

The UK for example could add a small section to the current Astute Class SSN. To make a new SSBN with just say 4-6 Tubes. Which, could provide anywhere from 48 MIRV's to 75 MIRV's.

Clearly, such a solution would be vastly cheaper. While, still providing a very worth while deterent. IMO

Well seeing that the Aus navy thread is having some "Quite Time". I thought I would start this thread to move the discussion in a different direction.

The R.A.N is soon have four RAS-L supply capable ships. The LHD's are equipped with a single Ras-L rig on the aft STBD side of the Island.

Whilst being a tanker is clearly nowhere near the top of the priorities for the LHD's I do think it is a very handy capability to have if only to provide training to accompanying escorts. From the "Sin Binned" thread it is clear the LHD does not have extensive bunkerage for aviation fuel but I doubt it would have the same issue with F-76 (Diesel). Of course it would not have anywhere near the bunkerage of our AO or AOR but It cleary has some (limited) reserves it can transfer to its escorts.

Being able to supply one or two escorts on longer peace time deployments would be very handy.

Thoughts?

GF and other mods, I am happy to have this thread merged when things have settled down a bit:kar
