RA SIGS - Operator Command Support Systems

Has anyone actually done this job or know people who do?

I have read as much web info on it as I can find and it just sounds like a regular I.T job aka build up lans/wans/troubel shoot broken computers and just maintaining lans in bases.

But when I was talking to an air forcemen he made it sound like i'd be pulling apart routers and putting them back together or something, he basically made it sound like nothing in the descriptions and i'm just curious as to what the job actually involves.

I don't do the job myself but, I have seen the guys do this job in the field. Involves setting up a network in the field (in tents with lots of water, dust etc) keeping the equipment running, fault finding and all the normal IT stuff plus a server piquet (sigs version of a gun piquet) during the night so you can know if the server goes down during the night and fix it asap. Then you have all the normal soldier duties like taking your turn at keeping the perimiter of the camp secure.

Basically, it does involve a lot of the normal IT network admin role plus being able to fight as a basic infantry soldier if needed.

i was employed in this role for 5 years b4 i pulled the pin. this job depends on where you are sent to. if you are sent to Darwin u will be working on BCSS. bcss is the worst job you will pull, no technical use of the skill you learn. If you are sent to brissie or sydney where i was stationed you will be working on field deployable lans, its like a lan but u will be running cable though tents and the server will be in the back of a mog. u sometime work on routers if u want it. though at the end of the day when you have finished your time they don't give you the certs you deserve because now they teach you just enough to do the job, but not enough to get employable qualifications out of it. if you do this job there is a lot of sitting around. i suggest you invest that time in doing extra education that is subsidised by the army. i did most of my engineering bachelors b4 i told them where to stick it. i tried getting a job with my cert 3 in IT and it got me nothing so don't rely on it.

threads been dead for 3 years....

btw the CSS role depends on where you're sitting.

eg, internal unit support, cisso, or in the case of BCSS, you'd have to be specific as its still a live project.
