Greetings everybody,

For starters, I hane a rather simple question. I am looking for English word for
"panzerschlitz" , which is quite simply the slot thru which the machine gunner
can view his target. To my absolute amazement, googling, which I succesfully
did on many previous occasions, did not yield anything at all. So, I am sure that
somebody here should be able to help me with the greatest of ease.

Thanking all of you in advance

I have never heard a specific word for it, but I am only a civvy and perhaps the defence pros here know. In ye olde times of forts and castles the holes archers shot through were called 'arrow loops' and which later became loopholes.

depends on when in the history of armoured vehicle development that you're referring to

used to be pistol ports
then gun ports
then and still is view ports
then and still is vision ports
then and still is vision blocks
then and still is periscope

in the Grants they were called "protectoscopes"

etc etc

there are some blackhats on here so they might add further detail at some stage

Your best bet would probably be to contact the Tank Museam at Bovington in Dorset in the UK. Im sure that if anyone knows they would. Though i suspect there is no one definitive name to cover it

I could have spent a few days just wandering around, there is quite a bit to see

We also call it periscope blocks, to add to an already long list :)

I used Google translate and it says Panzer slot. So I tried some others a and came up with:
Reverso = armoured fly - go figure :D
SYSTRANet = tank slot.
Bing = Armour slot.
Linguatec = Armoured slit.
PROMT = Armoured slit.
Pons = Armoured slit.

A rather unscientific poll but we end up with:
1 Panzer slot.
1 Armoured fly.
1 Armour slot.
1 Tank slots.
3 Armoured slits.

Take from it what you will.

Panzerschltz Conclusion

Thanks a lot everybody,

In conclusion I would think "tank slit" or "tank slot" come closest. In the
German language it has become an expression for somebody's view
of the world, thru a tank slit, which would of course be rather narrow.
But maybe it should be a realization that, necessarily, we *all* view the
world thru our very own slot, and therefore it looks different to everbody.

Thanks a lot again. Kutte

at the end of the day its what the manufacturers and operators call it

I've had a look at some contemp user manuals and engineering docs for modern MBT's - the engineering docs usually call them vision blocks
