The United Arab Emirates' (UAE's) recent EUR160 million (US$205 million) order for 32 Rheinmetall Landsysteme (RLS) Fuchs 6 x 6 nuclear, biological and chemical (NBC) reconnaissance vehicles brings the Fuchs NBC 'club' up to seven countries.

The main role of the Fuchs vehicle is to detect, identify, mark, sample and report NBC contamination on the battlefield and provide this information as soon as possible to the next chain of command in real time.

The occupants of the vehicle are protected from small arms fire and shell splinters, with the vehicle's collective and positive overpressure system providing protection from NBC elements. The air-conditioning system enables the vehicle to operate in hot climates encountered in the Middle East.

The German Army has 114 vehicles, with other customers being the Netherlands (2 + 6 under conversion), Norway (2 + 6 under order), Saudi Arabia (10), the UK (11) and the US (123).

In many cases, these vehicles have been upgraded several times as the threat and/or technology has changed. The UK vehicles, for example, are now being fitted out through a mid-life upgrade (MLU) by RLS at its Kassel facility under contract to the UK's Defence Logistics Organisation. The first vehicles have already returned to service.

The UAE is the launch customer for the new Fuchs 2 series of vehicles, which will be the most advanced vehicles of their type produced by RLS. The order comprises 16 NBC reconnaissance vehicles, eight bio vehicles and eight command post vehicles, which will provide the UAE with a complete NBC detection capability linked to a command-and-control system.
