Btr-82?!

Can anyone find anything more then Arzamas Factory announcement that production of these vehicles starts next year?

Apparently just like BTR-80 and BTR-80A, the reg. variant will have a 14.5mm machinegun, and the A will have a 30mm automatic cannon. The turret will have a new stabilization mechanism, and new optics. However this comes on top of the BTR-90 production which has allegedly already started.

What are the principal differences? The pictures that they offer are look pretty much like BTR-80s. In the article, they said they're ceasing BTR-80 production. Are the BTR-82s any better?

What I've been able to find is new optics, and a stabilizer for the turret. I don't know what other changes are being made, but recently there was a visit by MIC engineers and directors to the NCMD, to a brigade of Interior Ministry troops, where they specifically discussed the merits and shortcomings of wheeled vehicles such as the Ural trucks, Tigr armored cars, and the BTR-80 APC. So this might be related to that.

Re BTR-82 - this is a deep upgrade of BTR-80, in addition to new FCS (which has some very important changes, including the stabilizer, and especially in a 30mm case which also introduces remotely fused ammo) there is an upgraded engine, spall liner to help mitigate problems with protection, and other improvements.

So the BTR-90 is still intended to enter serial production, and only a year later. Given the changes are rather, minor this BTR-82 outfit seems to be retrofittable (except maybe the spall liner) to regular BTR-80 and 80A.

EDIT: Some speculation to throw in there, we might be looking at both being inducted into service, the 82 for MVD perhaps, and the 90 for army units. Or given the comments about major differences in production between the 80 and 90 series BTRs, they might be produced in parallel due to some overall limiter on the BTR-90 production line.

But I hear that the MVD has been receiving the BTR-90s, and not the Army.

As far as I know, nobody has been receiving the BTR-90 is appreciable quantities. Do you have sources indicating otherwise?

Agree with - there some technological problems with BTR-90. Money are not a big problem right now. As I know I there are problems with some systems of this BTR

My mistake, it says that both the MVD (Interior Troops) and the Russian Military
have been getting small quantities. Again, feel free to dispute Wikipedia, but it's the best I can get right now.

I don't know what they mean by Russian Military. Perhaps the Morskaya Pekhota are also getting them? They weren't specific about which part of the Military was getting them, but I'd have to guess that it's probably the ground forces. They make it clear though that the MVD is certainly getting limited numbers.

I think we need to wait and see if more reliable sources come out. I'm fairly certain a limited production run was started in the early 90s, but where it went, and how large it was is a mystery.
