How much training does a soldier get before he is sent to a combat zone. Is it just basic training and Advanced Individual Training? Is he assigned to a unit and train with them before he goes overseas?

Depends heavily on the country. In Germany, can be as low as 6 months from entrance to deployment (basic training, specialization, deployment training).
