Hey Guys, I was doing some thinking last night (It hurt this time :D) and wondered, a large number of world forces have upgraded their exisitng cabalbility rather than seeking a new capability Australia for one...

My question to you is whats the future in world IFV's I can't see a soloution like the CV90 taking over the M113, because it will be too old by the time the M113's are retired...

Thoughts...

Erm, most nations are retiring the M113. As in 5 years ago, if possible. And the M113 isn't ratable as an IFV anyway...

Nah, wheeled APCs and MPPVs for the most part - in those countries where there are already tracked IFVs anyway.

Examples:
Netherlands: M113 (YPR IFV) -> CV90 (IFV)
Italy: M113 (VCC APC) -> Dardo (IFV)
Belgium: M113 -> Iguana, Pandur 6x6
Denmark: M113 -> Piranha III
Germany: M113 -> GFF2 (Eagle IV, Dingo 2)
USA: M113 -> Stryker, uparmored HMMVW

You have to remember that one is an APC the other is IFV, these two descriptions are to different vehicles in the roles and at times 2 different doctrines. APC on delivers the troops and IFV delivers and fights with the troops. HMMVW are similar to APC which provides protection against small arms and grenades. strykers are an interim armoured vehicle not an IFV or maybe closer to an APC as it is classed as a Light armoured vehicle.
M113 are being replace by LAV or other wheeled vehicle as a cost cutting measure in relation to operational costs, longer service life etc.
up armouring M113 is usually a survival response and/or increasing the service life of the vehicle is a changed doctrine.

Denmark is replacing our ageing pool of some 600+ M113s with CV9035s in the IFV role and the MOWAG Piranha IIIC in the APC role. We're probably going to retain most of the specialized versions of the M113 (Artillery spotter, Mobile Radar, etc.) for some years yet.
