THE EUROFIGHTER TYPHOON – CAPABILITY BRIEF

Wing Commander Jez Attridge, MBE RAF



The Eurofighter Typhoon is a twin-engine, canard (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canard_%28aeronautics%29)-delta wing (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delta_wing), multirole (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Multirole_combat_aircraft), generation 4.5 strike-fighter aircraft. It is being designed and built by a consortium of three separate partner companies: Alenia Aeronautica (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alenia_Aeronautica), BAE Systems (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BAE_Systems), and EADS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EADS) working through a holding company Eurofighter GmbH (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eurofighter_GmbH) which was formed in 1986.
The series development of the Typhoon is underway with the aircraft in operational service with the Royal Air Force (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Air_Force), the Luftwaffe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luftwaffe), the Italian Air Force (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aeronautica_Militare_Italiana), the Spanish Air Force (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_Air_Force) and the Austrian Air Force (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Austrian_Air_Force). Saudi Arabia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saudi_Arabia) has signed a GB £ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pound_sterling)4.43 billion (approx. AUD 10.3 billion) contract for 72. The Typhoon is growing in capability as the series develops; those in operational service today will evolve over time.
In this presentation, WGCDR Attridge will provide some insights into the capabilities and strategic implications of the introduction of a current generation aircraft.

Jez Attridge is currently attending the Australian Command and Staff College at Weston Creek. He flew the Tornado F3 from 1991 to 1999, the F/A-18 on exchange duties with the USMC from 1999 - 2002 and latterly the Eurofighter Typhoon from 2005-7. He will take command of XI Sqn (Typhoon) in April 2008.

The seminar will commence promptly at 1030 hours.

From a laymen's point of view I would be interested to hear how the speaker compared the Typhoon to flying the F18 & Tornado - a quantum leap?

Unable to pass public comment.

But, profile specific comparison was made with Tornado, only obliquely wrt Hornet.

If there are any public leaks I intend blaming JWCook. :)

There wasn't too much that was actually sensitive, mainly public knowledge, but I intend to honour the Sensative classification as stated at the start of the brief.


[gf0012-aust] Yup I should have hung around and had a coffee.. but it was my first Aus defence briefing, I just kept a low profile to see how it all worked.. I'll PM you..

Funny how the briefing was closed to the German, Spanish, and Italians....:) but open to the US... I can understand the French being suspect.

actually, there are a number of countries in NATO who exclude the French due to trust issues. I've witnessed it myself on a commercial weapons development project - they were specifically excluded because they then had a history of not playing to the rules.

The US is a trusted partner at different levels (but in this case in particular because they've been involved in some of the sensor fusion development)

Briefings aren't run in "Passless" rooms. It was an information session albeit caveated with restrictions provided by a RAF exchange pilot currently at the Staff College and invited by the Air Power Dev Centre.

We've already had the detailed briefings on Typhoon a few years back.

and yes you're right, we're not going to buy it, or rafale or gripen or flankers. :)

How many ideas & designs did the French steal?

Don't get me wrong, I am just curios about this kind of behavior between states when it comes to military technology.

I can think fo any number of agreements that Australia, US, UK, Canada and some NATO members are bound to which exclude the French for a number of reasons. It's life.

I've worked on a weapons project a few years back where we specifically had problems with the French liaison officer and military attache. It's life. It happens.

Yes, and I can give you similar instances in the other direction. national interest sometimes effects relationships - sometimes it doesn't.

Nope. can't do. It was specifically stated that no material could be quoted from source and that it was US, UK AUST Nationals only. Whats unusual was that it was "3 Eyes" and not "4 Eyes", but hey, I have no idea why the ratings were applied to that particular cohort.
