View Full Version : Don't tell me nobody ever thought of this one!

tell me something guys
how come not a single airline ever thought abt removing the life jackets from under the seats and installing parachute packs?
maybe governments could subsidize them or provide them free of cost?

The International Airline and Travellers Association rules stipulate that any aircraft travelling over water has to carry lifejackets.
It would be physically impossible to carry parachutes as well as lifejackets due to a number of issues:
space availability
training issues, you just can train someone to do a parachute drop prior
to every flight
cumbersome. imagine trying to get every passenger to put on a
parachute while they are in a state of stress and panic
universal parachute fit, not possible to accomodate people who are
physically bigger than the average person would require a special chute
I'm sure there are some other issues to contend with, but you get a fair idea of the problems..
So, it's a bright , but just a bit impractical.

Better build a self concealing capsule on each seat with parachute. The only think the passenger have to do is push a button when they already fasten their belt and brace themselves. The capsule can be build with an inflatable rubber with two parts on the left and right with a small high pressure gas tank under each seat. each part will form a semi-sphere and with the middle part meet at the middle, if you got my picture. In the meeting parts is a special glue that stick permanently and very air and water tight (i assume it is one time use). The capsule is attach to the parachute.

that sounds a little impractical :eek

well, even if it isn't impractical, wouldn't the plane bcome too heavy?

naw, just less passengers or engines with more thrust. the b747 can fly with 2 of its engines out.

I did mention a word inflatable right? maknanya kita boleh lipat, jadi gulungan kecil. lagi pun benda ni buat dari getah atau plastik. lepas tu dalamnya diisi dengan angin, dia mengembang jadi le bentuk sfera.

I'm sorry, it's just a joke, so don't take it seriously. What i'm saying is that it is inflatable. that means when you don't fill it with the air, it is a very small roll and can be store in the small compatment beside the seats. Just like rubber boat. But i think i need to think about it again.

You could always make inflatable backs on the seats. Each seat becomes a floating pod.

Which one?

January 26th, 2004, 06:06 AM
maybe one could have ummmm parachutes in the seats
so, if an emergency occurs, the passenger would press a button which would open a hatch or something and the seat drops out.....(maybe the newer airliners can have cargo holds ABOVE the passenger section) and all they would have to do is wear their seatbelts throughout the trip and have detachable oxygen bottles in a section around them
so, basically, i saw ur 007 and raised u a star wars kinda thing..;)[/img]

Which one?
Its one of the Sean Connery ones, but I can't remember, which one.
You know the F111's had a deployable pod. The cockpit was a module which was rocket boosted off the airframe. It had its own parachute and was able to act as a floating cell as well. The ultimate safety capsule. :)

ya but they finished that coz it was too expensive
but it was a nice idea....till ofcourse, the pod malfunctioned!!
haha
the thing had an inflatable raft kinda thingy which helped to keep it afloat
and had it's own oxygen resource

theyve had floating seat cushions for a long long time. :soldier you must not pay attention to the safety video they show before teh flight :eek :lolol :lolol :lolol

you get inflatable cushions? all we get are lifejackets!
unless you are talking about the big suckers that deploy on a forced landing. not sure if they're easy to modify with parachutes etc. although they would be fantastic if you want a flying "slippery dip". :roll

all airplanes airbus and boeing have these :? . just lift up the bottom seat cushion and it has two straps to hold on with. just incase your lifejacket isnt enough flotation.
just a joking about the saftey video thoug :D :P

Well, in all our excitement talking about parachute, do we ever thought about the event prior to chute deployment, like, EJECTING. I guess this event will see many fatalities.

What?...You mean like all the plane's passengers leaping out one by one (Geronimo) and ending up in the jet engine?
Out of the frying pan and into the fire.
Regardless of everything, would it actually be feasible to chute out at 35,000 feet?

oxygen supply and a lack of warm air could dampen the enthusiasm for doing a 35k jump.
put it this way, they could all be entitled to honorary parachute jump wings.
all those completing a successful HAHO could start new jobs in the special forces. :)
if they open lower, then they could be HALO certified. ;)

Any lower, and you can be DOA-certified...heh heh... *throws head back and guffaws
How inconsiderate of me.
I'm getting more and more irresponsible each day. Damn.

since civilians dont have any experincen in jumping i think it will end out a HANO (high alt no-opening :D ) jump.

ummm do they really have floatable thingies under the seats?
of what practical use r they?
i mean, if a plane blows up or nething or is abt to crash (not over water), then u don't need floatation devices under the seats do u?
and since jumping out of an aircraft at 35000 feet is a very very 'scary' thing to do, i think it would b a HANG jump (high altitude no-jump)

Wait! Better still why not issue every body with jetpacks! :D
Or better stop flying alltogether :smokingc:

So commercial airliner passengers and crews can do nothing except wait in their seat, don the mask and pray that the aircraft don't disintergrated once they touch the gound.
