The Janes publishing company produce a variety of Defence related magazines.However subscription rates are very high and the online content is always abbreviated.Does anybody know of a cost effective way of being able to access the full text of articles either in printed or electronic form?

Extremely well sorted libraries.

I did ask a long time ago the local library to keep some of the Janes books and magazines but I think they are still thinking about it three years later!

Well, maybe you could possibly find some older issues on certain russian sites like avaxhome.ru :rolleyes: . The best way however is to buy this magazine legally as these people too have to earn money somehow.

A subscription to their naval magazine is £145.If you want it in electronic format the complete package is over £500 a year!!

Only people working in defence industries can afford such expensive subscriptions. I've bought Jane's fighting ships (hardback copy) but only plan to buy it new every 3-4 years. I rely on sites such as this one to keep it updated ;)

I've resorted to buying recent out of date copies. For example I bought the 2004/2005 edition of Janes FS at the end of last year on the net through Scholars Bookshelf at a cost of $A129 (about ₤50). I'll update it again next year when the 2006/07 should be available with a decent discount. With updates from the net and visits to the local library, which always has the latest edition, I can keep reasonably up to date. Not as good as getting the latest copy but it is the best I can afford.

Mine (the main reference library in Hobart) keeps it in stock but it is not available to borrow. I have to spend time in the library and make notes to update my own copy.

Apart from Janes what other magazines and websites are required reading for naval news?

Janes is the best. The US Naval Institute publishes the Proceedings monthly magazine, especially the March International navies issue. The US Naval Institute also produces a similar large book to Janes called Combat Fleets of the World which is a English version of the French book.

I also like to read Ships Monthly, which has civilian and military news articles. But its not as thorough. A good internet site is ship-technology.com and naval-technology.com... But its not as thorough as I would prefer.

The *-technology.com site network supposedly simply collects its data from other sources including Jane's (and imo if they do that, they're doing a relatively good job at it) and a variety of online publications.

There's a dual-language German/English publication, "Weyers Flottentaschenbuch - Warships of the World / Fleet Handbook".

Enjoy's a similar good fame as Jane's naval publications or Combat Fleets of the World, however it's considerably cheaper - €64 for the current 2005-2007 edition. Appears every three years or so, so not as up-to-date necessarily. Current edition might be a bit hard to find though, Amazon outside Germany and such don't carry it of course. Old editions (60s in particular, for those interested in those times!) are available from $10 upwards on Amazon, the 80s and 90s editions already run from $25 upwards used.

Well, and for those that read German and have an interest in naval matters, DMKN (www.dmkn.de) is pretty much a must.

I also surf the web for the official navies websites. I also Google their defence ministries websites. They are filled with reams of information, and for the cost of the monthly internet service.. But so many of them are not in English. I can usually translate the Spanish versions, but I haven't a clue with many of the languages.

In the interest of being fair, why do you need them? My opinion is that the quality of Janes' work has been sub par and degrading rapidly of late, so it is more fruitful to look elsewhere.

If you are wanting to rapidly educate yourself from a layperson's perspective then Janes is a viable educational tool, but how many people with an amateur interest have the money to pay for the subscription?

Everyone else uses them as a passing reference, kind of like how you would use a world atlas. Its there on your shelf, not used very often and when you do use it it just tells you where something is and not much about it.

Wholeheartedly agree. Janes is but a shadow of itself, esp over the last few years.

My main ref now is Combat Fleets followed by Weyers, I'll only buy Janes when they advise me of offers that are competitive.

I tend to reply more on specialist trade publications via membership of a few institutions. Proceedings, Naval Sub League and then trade mags like Ocean Technology and Sea Technology

We used to use Janes reference books for everything minus naval ships as part of our library, but I would have to agree that around the mid nineties their information in not worth the price you end up paying for.

Janes has apparently launched a new series, World Navies. Does anyone know what the difference is between Fighting Ships and World Navies? Having read Fighting Ships for the past few years, I know what that contains, wondering if anyone has seen the new title/series and can identify differences, or if it just is a re-branding.

Somewhat different from JFS.

I'm actually a little disapponted with Janes in the recent times. Some of the stuff they wrote on PLA are clearly inaccurate. I'm not sure if it's worth the 1200 pound value.
