Has any one seen "Top Gun"? In that movie USNavy's F-14s go against MiGs but f you notice that MiGs are not realy MiGs but F-5s. PS they just call them MiGs. Not MiG-19/21/25/27/31 etc.

In another movie "hot shots" a comic perody of "Top Gun" again the US fighters (in Hot Shots case I dnt knw which AirCrafts were being used, they werent F-14s) go against MiGs. Again F-5s stared as MiGs.

I saw another movie in which a boy flies an F-16B to rescue his father from some ME country. When he reachs that ME country he is met by MiGs. This time mirages starred as MiGs.

It was only today (28/3/05) that I saw a movie in which US pilot flew a MiG aggressor for a test & in that movie the MiG realy happened to be a MiG, infact it was MiG-29.

I dnt knw why US has not been able to get MiGs even to star in the high budget movies even though USAF has few MiG-29s as aggressors.

The only accurate movie I see so far is from "Air Force One" starring Harrison Ford. The movie use computer animated MiG-29s against F-15Cs.

I agree most of the movies are for casual viewers. While the majority of the population will accept the aircrafts, for us military buffs here in defence talk this is unacceptable, at least it is for me.

In movie Iron Eagle I, those "MiGs" are really Israeli Kfir.
In movie Iron Eagle III, the "MiGs" are F-4s with red star painted on them
In Rambo II and III, the Hind helicopters are Eurocopter SA-330 Pumas with dummy wing and rocket pods attached to them.

Also in another movie, there were two Chinese MiGs flying. They were MiG-25s. China never had MiG-25s.

I really hope that movie makers will pay attention to these small but important details. It shouldn't be hard since computer animation is getting better and better.

Also, something interesting to point out:
In the movie Independence Day, towards the ending of the movie where a large fleet of fighters are scrambled to attack the mother ship, if you look closely toward the bottom of the screen you'll see several F-14s, a Harrier and 2 MiG-25s. Not all of them are F-18s. If you pause the scene you can see it a bit clearer.

and during presidents escape in AF1 from andrews, there's 2 F-15 escorting the AF1. in Top Gun, the MIGs was actrually numbered 28s. MIG-28. at least the producer is smart enough to know MIG-28 don't exist. one more thing in top gun, why did the F-14 have to engaged the MIGs in dogfight range? they have phoenix or Sparrow that can blast those migs at Beyond visual range.

in independence day, during the alien attack on the Will Smith marine air station (what's the name?) i can swear that i've seen an F-16. do marines have F-16 or it's USAF fighter on visit.

I dont remember the name of the movie but this movie was just ridiculous! They show USAF pilots flying F-16s in desert camouflage (I think they were flying Israeli jets) and only two F-16s (flown by the hero and his matey) go in to this Middle-Eastern country (I think they were either showing Syria or Iraq) and defeat atleast 8 Migs and then the partner of the hero is shot down by one of the Migs (finally...for a moment I thought they were going to show two F-16s taking out the entire airforce of that country even amid all the ack-ack and SAMs being fired at 'em).

After that the hero in his lone F-16 wrecks havoc and lands on the runway of the hostile forces' base (with almost all enemy fire missing him) and saves his friend (another pilot - it was the mission given to the two F-16s if I remember correctly) by firing sidewinders while the F-16 is stationary (I dont know if you can do that) and against all the odds (looked like an entire battalion of hostile forces closing in and shooting all types of ammo) they manage to get back in the F-16 and fly away nice and easy!!!

And not to forget, sometimes the camera shows the F-16s loaded with missiles and the camera shot shifts and when it focuses on the aircraft again, its without any missiles (just the guns - with which they show Migs getting killed like ants). They even show one of F-16s (the hero's, ofcourse) firing more missile than the hardpoints available to load 'em on. I hafta admit, no movie could more hillarious than this one.

PS: Yes, the Migs werent really Migs. Looked like F-5s to me!

The movie you are talking about is Iron Eagle. The guy he's saving was his dad, who was shot down at the beginning of the movie. The country is Egypt. Those "MiGs" were Israeli Kfirs. On the ground the F-16 fired a Maverick missile at an incoming APC. I'm still in doubt that if this can indeed be done...the Maverick is too heavy and will drop right to the the ground before getting enough speed for the fins to produce any lift.

By the way the F-16 he was in flew all the way from a base in Israel to Egypt, some 800 miles away, loaded with armaments without any external drop tanks, dogfighted, dropped bombs, more dogfights, then returned home still with 800 pounds of fuel left. This is just physically impossible. From the movie it appeared that he had his afterburner on all the time too.

Well yeah AF-1 is a latest movie when technology is running high so they can make MiG-29 animations. It was good to see some level of accuracy.

In Independence day it was a all nation attack on the mother ship. Remember they showed Iraqi & Israeli AirForce & army personal stationed at same base.

Ok here is some thing realy realy funny. Has any one seen jule of the nile. In tht movie villon puts kathleen Turner in jail & Michael Douglas goes to saver her. He takes her out of the jail & both start to run from gurads. They came to a hault on some remote street of remote (village) like town where on that street stands an F-16B:D . Micheal Douglos & Kathleen Turner mount the AirCraft & he drives it all the way out.:D

Lol....F-16 on a remote Egyption street than Douglas knows how to drive it. Thank God he dint fly it or it would have broken the records of movies mentioned above.:D

Thanks for your additions to my post about that movie and further clarification. You have got to admit that it was the worst air power related movie ever by Hollywood. :D I guess just like all other movie industries, Hollywood too has its share of pathetic movies.

Sabre: Yes I believe I just saw that last scene of that movie (Jule/Jewel of the Nile) around two weeks back when it was aired on some channel. Another disaster of Hollywood movie making! :coffee

& guess what the villon was going to do with this "ONE" F-16. He was going to start a revolution. lol..with only one AC, only one F-16 represents whole of his AirForce :D

Most of the movies are pretty bad. The thing that drives me nutz is usually in every, the pilots are yanking the controls around like they are trying to pump water!! You yank controls around like they do in the movies and your going to have a big problem in about 2 nanoseconds.

The best movie so far whose director seemed to have had some proper sense of aircrafts would be Behind Enemy Lines I'd say. The F-18 action captured in the way is as close to reality as it can get it seems.

Which one was "behind the enemy line"??
Is it the one in which USNavy's F-18 on Recon mission gets shot down by Serbs & Owen Wilson (hero off the movie) is on the run while Gene Hackmen, AC Carriers captain tries to find him through satalite???

If its that than the F-18 thing went well. They did a nice shot.
The story also happens to be some what a true story. In serbia a USAF F-16C was shot down. US considered that th pilot is dead but than the pilot some how reported on wireless radio to his control centre that he is alive. But serbs were also on continious search of him. He made it to Belgium safely though. Search & Rescue mission was conducted for him. He was out there for 2 weeks. If caught he would have been slaughtered by Serbs.

Thats the one Sabre. Excellent movie and the F-18 being shot down was the magic scene of the movie I'd say (in the sense they showed what 'really' happens when two SAMs are on your tail). Lets hope someone decides to make a movie with more daring and accurate scenes of ACs and in some action. :P

And there's another movie called "AIR RAID".In this a US civilian plane is hijacked by terrorists for getting info on US spy's operating in different parts of the world. There's the scene which has the USAF scrambling F-16's but are reffered to as F-15's both by the AF and the flight control tower. They clearly show the single engine on the F-16's and even have a few close up shots on the plane.:D

And I'm sick of Hollywood movies abt terrorism (even ones released way before 9/11). Is it by luck that every time the terrorists turn out to be Arabs? LOL We need a break from the typical stereotype B.S. please!!

I guess it was soviet and yugaslav separatists and spy's who were the flavour in hollywood before 9/11 but these days its its more arab and asian that soviets.Even if they do involve soviets they brand them as money greedy smugllers.:coffee

Behind Enemy Lines is indeed the most accurate military aviation movie by far. They even used the F-18E Super Hornet rather than the original hornet. You'll notice this by seeing the square intake rather than the round intake on the aircraft.

However it does have glitches. Towards the end of the movie when Gene Hackmen took 3 huey gunships to rescue Owen Wilson, those 3 huey gunships seems invincible, as it takes on a dozen of AK-47 and AK-74 small arms fire, three BMP APC's 30mm cannon, and a T-72's 7.62mm caliber. The hueys managed to wipe out this force using only appeared to be gattling guns. Hmmmm.....it got me wondering again

Attack AirCrafts & halicopters have strong bodies. They can take on heavy fire. Some of them have fire proof & builet proof cockpits too. Recon halicopters have to be even more stronger but its gunship u say, I think they'll servive heavy firing.
Some of the gunships are considered as flying tanks. I havent seen behind enemy line completely. Lost interest after F-18 was shot down so dnt knw which gunship they used.

Those 'gunships' are never shown wiping out the entire hostile forces on the ground except for maybe one or two APCs blown up by missiles. Most of the mess are the hostile soldiers that die by the fire of the gunships. And also it is not clearly shown if the tank shell 'actually' hits the gunships or not. Most of the enemy fire is mis-directed and even the last round fired by the tank only managed to take out the huge 'angel' statue in the frozen lake. The gunships mostly take light ammo fire which I think is sustainable as they're made to be hardcore.

Not that this has to do with movies but in C&C:Generals in the instruction book it says a "B-3" drops the fuel air bomb but really it's a B-2....

Play ACE COMBAT 4 & Leathal skies 2 on PS2. Ur ground officer will inform you that B-2 are coming to bomb the area, take care of them. He says find them, they are typical to Radar. When I went to find them they were right there on my Radar. Clearly visible.

There used to be a TV series that would defy all the laws of Physics. It realy did not have any thing to do with USAF but still govt was involved. It was called "AIR WOLF"..now I loved the series & its music specialy as a kid but now when I see it, it burns me inside put. The AIR WOLF which is a helicopter escapes 2 USAF F-14 by flying at Mach-2 while F-14s give up the pursue to chase. Think the pilots for got that their AC is also Mach-2.

Yup I remember that TV program. Loved it beyond any other show in my childhood days but yeah, now it just doesnt have that appeal cuz of what you've just mentioned. I'm thinking that show was specifically designed for kids. So I'd say lets stick to shows and/or movies aimed at adults. :P

Guys, there will be new airforce movie this summer, the title is 'Stealth', i just see it 30 seconds trailer in TV.The story is promising, in the future US Navy has so-advanced Atificial-Intelligence pilot, and they put that machine in a navy stealth fighter plane. It called a FA-37 Talon, more info about this bird in http://www.americanantigravity.com/stealthmovie.shtml.Look like a smooth version of F-117 for me.
In a routine patrol the robo-plane going nut because something, and like in terminator 3, he activate his robo-mate to attack a city.So the human pilot has to stop them.Based on list of the actor, there was an korean name in the list, i guess the routine patrol is somewhere near Korean border.
I think it will difficult for us to find the error in this movie, because the director can simply say that it could happen in future.:D
