This is regarding an idea from "pathfinder-x" in this thread:
http://www.defencetalk.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1819
The weapons database idea was approved :roll and is under development but it needs some serious help as far as content is concerned.
Who can help us take charge of this section, manage it, add content, etc. ?
http://www.defencetalk.com/wdb
As you can see, it doesn't have much. AD, GF and others have offered to help where they can but need few people to really go after it. The more knowledge you have about defence/military matters the better. Do not worry about design or working with code or anything. ;) I will take care of that.
More info as questions pop up.
Enjoy!!!

I have night school session until 11th, August and also a part time job. I don't have much time to fill in the weapon board. As soon as I'm done with my night sessions I'll start feeding in infos.
p.s I already filled in some info on land systems, but there is a problem with image posting, seems like you can't post it there.
WebMaster
July 12th, 2004, 06:33 PM
No problem Path.
And thanks for putting the info in.
When doing this we want to make sure we keep some of the atributes consistent, such as:
-Font
--size
--style
--heading, etc
-layout
As far as picture uploading, I haven't figured that out yet my self so as soon as I do will let you know. :D

Hmm.....I dont think I ll be much help on this cause of scarce time but I know I computer guy who is good at DB, web designing, Php (has made about 5 forums on VBulliten for different companies). He seems free now days, I think he ll be more than willing to help you ppl out regarding upgrading any thing on this forum even the DataBase, he can even make a GUI DB for you with Oracl and upload on this forum with out putting much of a load. The only problem with him would be that he is not interested in Defence issues, he doesnt knw any thing except that Pak have army and PAF has F-16s :D: .
If u want him I can contect him but u will have to provide him with some one who know very much on defence & wapons.
WebMaster
July 12th, 2004, 07:25 PM
Backend doesn't require knowledge about defence but backend programing. :D He only needs to know what he knows for this purpose. ;)
You can ask him if you want.
Remember, all work is voluntary.

Well, Soldier:
You can help manage it. Say act like an "editor" or something but that would mean a lot of people putting info in which would need approval, etc. We will figure out a way for you to help. :D

Good news!
Some type of integration of Weapons DB is underway with gallery software. As soon as that comes out we will implement it.
I am not sure if Sri would be able to do this? Feeding pictures from specific album in the gallery into specific (of same type) content on DB page?
WebMaster
July 14th, 2004, 05:52 PM
Okay, first: Can I get the names of the people interested in helping and being part of this?
Since the WDB is an open section, only editors/admins would need the user ID and thats why I need names so I can make those IDs. ALL mods will be part of this in one way or the other. So, any non-mods interested?
2nd, we may have to divide up the role of each user (who does what, etc).
Content Feeders (adding content)
Editors (adding content, approving other content/publishing other content submitted by users (content feeders).
Administration (do some more stuff plus whatever editors and content feeders can)
You may take up multiple roles if you wish.
When adding content, please keep these in mind:
-Font Style
--ARIAL
-Font Size
-- 2 (10 pt)
(right click where you are adding content > select ALL and then change the font for everythign or the size.)
Sources go at the very bottom. Like this
Source: whatever.com
As I said until a more user friendly appraoch comes out for gallery integration, we will have to do this if you want to insert pictures of specific equipment:
Say for example you want to add pics on F-16.
You will go into the gallery, click on F-16 album, highlight few pics and paste them after the "source" and that will look something like this:
http://www.defencetalk.com/wdb/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=8&Itemid=26
Scroll to the bottom.
If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
Thanks, enjoy!!!

I'll add and edit contents on land systems. I ain't no expert on computers so I'll just stick to what I know about tanks and armour vehicles.
And how about adding a small arms section to land system, a missile section for air and naval system??
WebMaster
July 15th, 2004, 12:49 AM
Will Do path. Also, follow the format (text size, style, etc) which is found in
-Air systems
--Fighters
---F-16

And how about adding a small arms section to land system, a missile section for air and naval system??
I was wondering about going on a bit different track for these.
Currently we have:
Airsystems,
Land Systems,
Naval Systems
I wanted to add:
Missile Systems < under them and then have sub categories like this:
-Missile Systems
--Surface to Surface
--Air to Air
--Air to Surface
--Naval
What do you think? Or would it be easier for you if it was under Land Systems? Then, It will be hard to divide them up in sub categories.
srirangan
July 15th, 2004, 11:02 AM
Nah I like missiles to be seperated from Land. We can add a SPACE category too imho.

but if i can be of any specific help then i am all ears

WDB is down for maintenance.
We need writers to write original content for that section. Anyone willing to write a brief history of military equipment and providing specs?
Pathfinder-X
July 18th, 2004, 02:55 PM
it's not gonna be easy, I only had experience of riding in some vehicle in the canadian army. Other than that I don't know what to write. So unless we got some expert from R&D industry, i don't think it's gonna work.

How about we gather the info from other source and type out the specs and info in our own words?? That should take care of the copyright problems. But it's gonna take alot longer to built up the weapon section, however it would add tremendous amount of credits to our site since not many others have their own data base.
WebMaster
July 21st, 2004, 01:18 AM
Thats what I was thinking. This means a lot of people will have to pinch in and help out. :help :help :help

I'm heading the weapon database team. Anyone interested please PM me or add me to their msn messenger LD871111@hotmail.com. I'm looking for members who can contribute on a regularly basis and have a fair amount of knowledge in defence(military background prefered). We need at least 5 members constantly adding and updating info to the database to make this work.
Note that we won't do copy and paste from other defence sites. We are coming up with our own articles to avoid copyright issues.

This is pretty clear.... please take heed. I don't really want to lock this thread.
PS: When its directed towards Admins and Mods and you know that only Admins or mods can reply to such queries, it would be better to just leave it alone instead of posting a reply just for sake of posting a reply. Chances are a mod or my self saw the reply but choose not to reply back as it creates chain of repies afterwards, which I don't really want to do in this thread or forum. If you really want to post do it in forums designated for theme of the website.

How would u solve the problem of different versions of a Weapon System.
For example T-72 has number of versions and Many countries buy it from Russia and make their own upgraded versions of T-72.Some other foreign countries offer upgrade packages to the T-72.
If all this are included, the article would become really big.
Nuclear and Space Weapons were not there in DB.Why is that??
Another problem is A Missile will have Air to Surface and Surface to Air Versions then in which it will be specified???
For joining DB Team,Will one need to have Complete info on weapon Systems becoz i dont know anything beyond that is given in Web.
I do want to help, but the problem is I don't spend much time on my Computer and suddenly if I become busy due to exams or some other reason.
Is there some deadline for submitting the article??

Ajay, I will try to answer some of your questions. Feel free to PM me if you need more details.
How would u solve the problem of different versions of a Weapon System.
For example T-72 has number of versions and Many countries buy it from Russia and make their own upgraded versions of T-72.Some other foreign countries offer upgrade packages to the T-72.
If all this are included, the article would become really big.Make one article for the baseline version. We can list other versions and operators in the article, and hot link to them in the future as the DB gets more developed.
Nuclear and Space Weapons were not there in DB.Why is that?? We can add this anytime, if we haven't already, but right now let's concentrate on the main systems- i.e. Air, Land and Sea.
Another problem is A Missile will have Air to Surface and Surface to Air Versions then in which it will be specified???Create an article for the baseline version, we can add links to variants later. If you want to write up both at the same time, go ahead, but keep the sections separate in the article so we can split them up and cross reference the articles as necessary.
For joining DB Team,Will one need to have Complete info on weapon Systems becoz i dont know anything beyond that is given in Web. No, you don't. We need to stay with open source data anyway. When that data is in pubic domain factsheets, we will use it directly. We just need to avoid copyright violations.
I do want to help, but the problem is I don't spend much time on my Computer and suddenly if I become busy due to exams or some other reason.
Is there some deadline for submitting the article??
I am not perfect in English Language, there will be some grammar and spelling mistakes. We will spellcheck and factcheck. There are no deadlines, this is a volunteer project. All we are looking for is for some steady progress.
Anyone else wih questions, or who would like to participate, please send me a PM.
