PAF to acquire mirages from libya
http://www.pakobserver.net/200406/16/view/?page=1&id=4
Islamabad—Pakistan Air Force is in the final stages of acquiring 35 old Mirages from Libya.
Well placed defence sources told Pakistan Observer that deal was almost finalized and Mirages will arrive in Pakistan shortly. Due to various sanctions and dormant Libyan Air Force, Mirages have been lying grounded for the past many years. PAF will either go for massive upgradation of these old Mirages or will use them as spare parts after scrapping them. PAF sources are hesitant to give out the financial outlay for the 35 Mirages but it will be on the basis of hard cash payment. It is believed that PAF has cut a good financial deal with Libya for this purchase. Libya after the lifting of sanctions is planning to equip its air force with new fleet of fighters. Sources said that if PAF decides to refurbish and upgrade old Mirages, it will have to equip the planes with new radars, avionics and weapon systems.
SAGEM of France had upgraded 40 old Mirages which PAF bought from Australia. It is yet to be decided by the PAF whether to upgrade or scrap the Mirages for use as spare parts. Pakistan has been finding it very hard to buy spares from France as they are very expensive.

After US sanctions Libyan Airforce became the most neglected force by Libya Govt. And Mirage aircrafts( 15 Mirage F1-ED, 6 Mirage F1-BD, 40 MIG 23BN Flogger, 30 Mirage 5D/DE, 14 Mirage 5DD & 14 Mirage F1-AD) were so neglected that only half were in flying condition, the others being cannibalized for spare parts. So they must have bought those by paying peanuts. Moreover PAF helped Libyan airforce in flying & maintenance during sanctions so they are the best to know what to do with those Mirages. I think PAF is undertaking a big overhauling plan for her aging Mirage III and V variants in wake of expensive French spares.

the infra structure is already there to upgrade and rebuild them. not all of them will end up being overhauled and upgraded some are for Parts cannibalization, these Jets are very Effective Bombers and reconance. after the grippens this is the only fighter that can achieve mach 2 at low altitudes. so with a 4 gen avionics package this Fighter bomber is very effective for the money they spend. most of them will be retired after the JF-17 phaze inn the Mirages are a short term Gap filler, but they (mirages) have teeth that do bite. i think 50 have been aquired from libya and there were some from Lebanon, the lebanese ones were used alot more so they may end up being cannibalized but last i had heard 14 of them were in the overhaul Factory being completely rebuilt and upgraded to Rose 3 standard.

considering that they have flown very little i don't think they are that bad. just need to be polished up a bit and then there ready for action.

Most of these planes have been in the storage for more then 6-8 years and they will be use for parts only; however, PAF may decide to upgrade few with Rose III project (better Avionics & Radar), also UAE will sell its fleet of Mirage V to Pakistan, negotiation is under way we should hear about this in few weeks.

Let's hope PAF spend enough $$$ on the upgrades or else we know depreciation works over time when equipment ain't being used. Good luck to Pakistan and Libya on this deal.

I think we all know that PAF knows better than anyone else how to efficiently use meagre resources that it has! Previous ROSE upgrades on Mirage IIIs and Vs and other measures taken such as that one shouldn't leave any doubts in anyone's mind. :smokingc:

I agree, PAF wouldn't invest their limited resources unless they knew it was a deal that would work.
