U.S agrees to provide F-16 to Pakistan

CNN is reporting that the U.S admin has agreed to the sale of F-16 ac to Pakistan. The number of ac was not specified. It further said that president Bush had personally called the indian pm to inform him about the decision.
One important thing that came out of the report was that Pakistan will be provided with second hand/refurbished ac and at the same time this deal will be followed by an other deal for brand new f-16 from the taxas line. As the reporter put it that this deal is very important from a eco point of view as with out this deal the production line will be shut down.

NEW DELHI: U.S. President George W. Bush telephoned Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Friday to tell him that the United States had decided to allow the sale of F-16 fighters to Pakistan, a spokesman for Singh said.

"The prime minister expressed India's great disappointment at the decision which could have negative consequences for India's security environment," Sanjaya Baru, spokesman for the prime minister's office, told media.

Washington blocked sales of F-16s to Pakistan in 1990 as a sanction against its nuclear programme.

US confirms sale of F-16s to Pakistan
(Updated at 2320 PST)

WASHINGTON: U.S. administration confirmed on Friday the sale of F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan in a major policy shift rewarding a key ally in the war on terrorism, administration officials said on Friday.

A senior Bush administration official said the sale, which was blocked for 15 years, "will not change the overall balance of power" between Pakistan and India, and the jets "are vital to Pakistan's security as President (Pervez) Musharraf takes numerous risks prosecuting the war on terror."

One Bush administration official said the sale involved 24 planes but another said the numbers could change.

India's prime minister expressed "great disappointment," a spokesman in New Delhi said.
