Russia Deploys Israeli UAVs

Russia’s Emergency Situations Ministry has deployed Israeli-made unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), each equipped with the same sensors the Israeli military uses to collect intelligence in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

The Israeli-made Aerostar UAVs were provided under a 2002 contract between Moscow-based Irkut and Aeronautics Defense Systems, Yavne, Israel, and are valued at tens of millions of dollars.

News of the heretofore undisclosed contract was first published in Sept. 19 issues of Yediot Ahronot, Israel’s largest daily newspaper, and subsequently confirmed to Defense News by Aeronautics. Company spokeswoman Irit Ovadia declined to provide additional details of the contract, but noted that Aeronautics “continues to work” with its Russian customer on the two-year-old deal. An Israeli Ministry of Defense (MoD) source also confirmed the existence of the contract, and noted Sept. 20 that it represented the first sale of an Israeli UAV system to Russia, which rarely purchases non-Russian-made weaponry.

The MoD source added that the UAVs sold to Russia are equipped with the same day-and-night observation system selected by the MoD for contractor-provided surveillance missions in the West Bank and Gaza Strip.

The system, built by Controp Precision Technologies, Hod Hasharon, Israel, was deployed from 2001 through 2003 on Aeronautics’ Aerostar UAV under a leasing arrangement, whereby MoD pays only for flight hours of imagery collection. However, in a follow-on outsourcing contract awarded by the MoD in August 2003, the Controp payload was reassigned to the Searcher UAV built by Israel’s government-owned Israel Aircraft Industries.

The Aerostar UAV sold to Russia is designed for day and night flights of more than eight hours, at altitudes of up to 15,000 feet.

Hey,
I know this message is OLD, but I found it out in Google, and the article at ISR-Journal isn't available no more.
I would like to get more info on Controp Precision Technologies, I visited their website and read a few words about reconnaissance but there isn't much info their.

Can anyone tell me more about Controp and other companies like them?

A second contract is in the works for Israeli UAVs between Russia and Israel. The second batch is valued at 100 million (vs the 53 million of the first deal) and is expected to be larger. If the first batch could be considered a test purchase for experimenting, this looks like a purchase intended for active service.

I thought the goal of Russia was to just purchase a few and then copy them? I guess it didn't want to look like too much of a hypocrite.

Actually no. The stated goal was to experiment with UAVs and test concepts of UAV usage. However surrounding the second purchase are statements by officials that domestic UAV manufacturers just can't produce anything competitive. This granted, the Army has been purchasing Tipchak artillery directing UAVs ( ~10 per year) and Stroy-PD recon UAV complexes with Pchela-1K UAVs (1 complex/10UAVs annually), in addition to the handful of Stroy-P systems already operation, and the Tupolev UAVs left from the Soviet days.

Copy them, Riiight..

Russia need those Israeli UAV now at this very moment, pronto, to day or rather two years ago..
Thats why they made this deal.
Wasn't there a statement from an RuAF commander stating it would be a crime to procure Russian UAVs now?
Russia UAV development will have to mature and take its own path.

If Russia copy paste Israeli UAV now they will no duobt shot them self in the foot here..
Much better sign a development deal with other Nation UAV Manufactors.

Thanks

After the recent failure of a 5 billion ruble testing program for domestic UAVs, Russian officials have announced that a joint enterprise for UAV production will be formed with Elbit Systems. In essence this will mean Israeli UAV production in Russia, with some domestic components and/or modifications.
