Peru Air Force to update Russian aircraft fleet

SANTIAGO, April 1 (Itar-Tass) - The Peruvian Air Force plans to start updating the fleet of Russian aircraft this year, Tass learnt at the FIDAE-2004 air show. Peruvian military experts held talks with the Rosoboronexport company and the Mil firm on updating 20 An-32 transport planes and around 40 helicopters Mi-8, Mi-17, Mi-24 and Mi-26.

The Peruvian Air Force also regards updating its Russian-made warplanes as a priority programme. These are 21 fighters MiG-29, bombers Su-22M2 and Su-22M3, seven two-seater planes Su-22u and 18 attack fighters Su-25.

The Sukhoi company reported that if mutually acceptable schemes of financing are found, the Russian side could suggest the Peruvian Air Force various versions of updating its warplanes.

The MiG Corporation also expressed readiness to organize service and repair centers for all MiG-29 fighters for the Peruvian Air Force. Depending on a volume and difficulty of repairs of each specific aircraft, a decision will be taken on its repairs either in Peru, in case of replacement of equipment, or a dispatch to Russia in case of difficult repairs.

All in all, Peru had 340 planes, including over 100 warplanes, 35 transports, 50 training planes and 70 helicopters.
