China is developing an advanced version of the Chengdu Aircraft Industrial Corporation (CAC) J-10 multirole fighter aircraft, referred to as the Super-10, with a more powerful engine, thrust-vector control, stronger airframe and passive phased-array radar, according to Russian sources.

Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG (RSK-MiG) specialists, contracted to provide technical assistance to Chinese design houses, said the enhancement to the J-10 airframe is a logical step, since the fighter was initially intended to have the compact Pratt&Whitney PW1120 engine that powered the Israeli Lavi aircraft, which served as a basis for the J-10.

However, the imposition of US export restrictions forced the decision to install the 20 per cent heavier Russian AL-31FN engine, which requires a larger intake as it needs 40 per cent more air flow.

Re: China working on 'Super-10' advanced fighter

It would appear that China is continuously upgrading its aircraft inventory all the time. The newer F10 has stronger airframe. Does this mean they are going to be using composite materials or titanium? Are they going to increase the payload if this is the case?

As I have pointed out several times in the past it would seem that the West in general is not sure at the rapid changes within the Chinese aircraft manufacturing establishment . One interesting point in this article is that the Russians have much to tell us about this programme? Have Russian scientists become part and parcel of the Chinese aircraft manufacturing establishment? Is it also possible that the Russians now see the Chinese as their logical partners in future joint aircraft manufacturing? Is there a clear shift now from the Indians to the Chinese? I believe that if India decides to purchase US fighter aircraft then the Russians would be further likely to increase defence production with China. China's growing economy and cash reserves would appear to be an important aspect to Russia's own R and D.

In the past it has been suggested that Pakistan may wish to buy the F10. The question is which version will they buy and are the willing to wait for the Super 10 aircraft that appears to be in the offing?

I wouldn't just believe everything the Russians say. They claim to help J-10 more than they actually have. Although it is true that CAC probably has quite a few Russian scientists in its payroll along with consultants for Mikloyan. The radar stuff is just rubbish. I think it's just pre-emptive strike by the Russians trying all it can to win the contract of J-10's radar, but it's unlikely to happen. That's all I have to say.

Another thing is that I do not see China as willing to participate with the Russians in future R&D in fighter industry at least. China has caught up enought, that it's probably more likely to develop 5th generation fighter first.

Re: China working on 'Super-10' advanced fighter

what Janes Defence Weekly has called - ' Super-10 ' is just a hint at the original intended production model of J-10 , which is supposed to have an engine with 'full-authority digital control' . JDW and the Russians make it sound so 'woah' ... hee

Flight International has a better report that gives a better picture of the production model J-10 . please refer to the link below .

see other report ( Flight International )

hope that helped
