Canadian Air Command Discussion

Moin,
as it seems we do not have an Canadian AF related Topic so I thought I start one.
Therefore I have a Question. The Canadians operate around 80 Bell 412 Helos which were purchased in the 90ies. Now it seems that some 412 Operators like Norway and Italy replace them with modern NH90.
But what about the Canadians? Well I know that they are just 10 Years in use, but is there any talk about replacing them? Because in comparison with t modern Helos those 412 lack at least the Capacity and maybe have difficulties in other areas.

Here is a source, it is from Wikipedia but it should help. It shows the entire Canadian Forces Air Command.

Griffons in the CF

Greetings,

Right now, even though we are embarked on a major re-equipment process, there are no plans to replace the Griffon in Canadian Service. We are acquiring Chinooks, C-17s, a new Fixed Wing SAR aircraft as continuing to Update our CP-140 Auroras (p-3) and Hornets.

In other words the Griffon is too light (the Brits have the same problem with the Lynx) - the lightness becomes acute in hot/high conditions.

Because they're relatively new I'd doubt there will be any decision for a primary battlefield helo 'til ~2015. The Chinooks are coming into service sometime in the next 2 years so that should alleviate some lift shortcomings.

If there was an interim decision, it'd probably be a good idea for Canada to purchase some US UH-60M production slots or some surplus 'Hawks (http://www.flightglobal.com/articles/2007/12/14/220293/sikorsky-lands-massive-us-order-for-black-hawks-seahawks.html)- the NH90 is more expensive and development has been late.

With the painful, convoluted process we (The Canadian Forces) use to procure new equipment, it could take years to decide and acquire new battlefield helicopters. It has been decided already to purchase new Chinooks so I don't think that you will ever see us buy uh-60s.

That being said, we have 28 S-92 Cyclones on order to replace Sea Kings, and we have experimented with using the Sea King as a Troop Carrier. I do not think it would be a huge jump to see some Cyclones appearing in Afghanistan once they've entered service. Of course it has been announced that they are behind schedule (24-30 Months) which would push the delivery back to a 2011 time frame.

I think its scandalous that the Canadians has had to hitch a ride in Afghanistan on the very same Chinooks they sold to the Netherlands some time ago. :)

There has been some talk in Canada about arming the Griffons and using them as escorts for the new Chinooks the Canadian Forces are purchasing. However I doubt this will happen, because of inadequate hot & high performance as was pointed out above.

Maybe with the 'Canada first' defence initiative extra funds will be forthcoming to buy extra choppers? Seems like the Canadian Government already realised some of their mistakes, like the decision to scrap the main battle tank capability, when they decided to replace the old Leopards with newer ones. (puchased from the Netherlands)
